Title:
Adams School
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1910 - 1940
Description:
This black and white photograph captures the Adams School on South Union Street in Burlington. Only a very small part of the street is visible in the lower right corner of the image. A stone curb, concrete sidewalk, and grassy parkway parallel the street. The school is sited on the back of the large, manicured lawn at the center of the image, and it faces slightly off to the right. The building is large and rectangular in shape, rises two stories in height, is constructed of brick, is topped with a hipped roof and appears to have been constructed around the turn-of-the-century. Two arched doors and rows of arched windows line the façade. Vines creep up the left end of the façade. A few mature, leafy, deciduous trees are scattered over the large, grassy, front lawn. A driveway extends along the left side of the school, and a wooden fence runs along the left side of the driveway. Plantings grow along the inside of the fence. The corner of a wood-frame dwelling is visible at the left edge of the image. Vines grow along the porch of the dwelling. Stairs and a walkway approach the porch of the dwelling. Another fence runs along the right edge of the property. The small corner of a neighboring building is visible at the right edge of the image. Several large shrubs and deciduous trees grow to the rear of the building in the background of the image. A wooden utility pole stands along the curb at the center of the image, and wires pass across the top edge of the image. The thick foliage suggests a summer season. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 through the 1950s.
