- Date:
- 1910 - 1940
- Description:
- This black and white photograph captures campers on horseback at Camp Awanee in Brandon. The six horses stand in a row at the front of a large camp building. Five female campers, that appear to be teenagers, and one male instructor are mounted on the horses. Another male instructor stands to the left of the row and holds the reins of the leftmost horse. The girls all wear camp uniforms. A rough dirt road passes across the foreground of the image at the front of the horses. The large building to the rear is two stories in height, is covered in wood siding, and has a gable roof, a rustic log porch, large casement windows, and exposed roof framing. Wooden chairs provide seating along the porch. A few tall, leafy, deciduous trees grow to the rear of the building. The season is summer. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 through the 1950s.
