Hazen Blanchard House

Title:
Hazen Blanchard House
Town:
Peacham
County:
Caledonia
State:
Vermont
Date:
1870 - 1900
Description:
This historic photograph captures the Hazen Blanchard House in the village of Peacham. A woman poses on the lawn before a small, one-and-one-half story, wood-frame, eaves-front dwelling. The circa 1849 house was constructed in the popular mid-19th century Classic Cottage style and features a full Cape plan with Greek Revival details. A single-story wing, with an inset porch supported by squared columns, extends off the right side of the house. A bay window opens into the side wall of the wing. A simple wood chair sits on the porch. Another second wing with porch extends off the rear of the first wing and rests upon a tall, stone foundation. A variety of barns and outbuildings are attached to the rear of the house. This practice of "connected architecture" was popular in Vermont, as it allowed people to pass directly from the main house to the outbuildings during the cold winter months. A few leafless deciduous trees are clustered in the front yard, which is otherwise free of vegetation. A small wood fence was constructed along the side of the yard. The woman stands alone in the yard and is dressed in typical late-19th century attire. The season is likely late winter or early spring, as there are no leaves on the trees and the woman does not wear a coat. The Hazen Blanchard House has been previously occupied by Charles Williams, Wendell Achilles, May Martin, and Carolyn Long and is now located in School District One, within the Peacham Corner Historic District.
