Building the Railroad

Title:
Building the Railroad
Town:
Williamstown
County:
Orange
State:
Vermont
Date:
1888?
Description:
This image shows several men building the railroad behind the feed store. The initial steel railroad ties have been laid in the ground cutting across the image from the lower right into the background at center. A steep cleared bank cut into for the railroad construction on the right shows signs of heavy erosion. Several men are operating a large backhoe-like piece of machinery along the base of this bank near the tracks. A small building is placed behind this machinery. Several more men are on the left side of the tracks and the initial stages of some type of guardrail appear to follow along the tracks. The rooftops of a few buildings and a partially cleared hill are visible in the background. The season is summer.
