Building of the Railroad in Gaysville

Title:
Building of the Railroad in Gaysville
Town:
Stockbridge
County:
Windsor
State:
Vermont
Date:
1899?
Description:
This historic photograph is from the construction of the White River Railroad around 1899. The river is visible meandering to the right of the image with little riparian growth, but a large amount of woody debris. It looks as though the workers threw what they cleared off of the hill slopes into the river. Two terraces are visible, though they could be manmade. At the left center of the image is a main road with wooden guardrails. There is also a wooden utility pole on this main road with utility wires that stretch across the water. The area above the road is in the process of being clear-cut, resulting in soil erosion. There appears to be a shallow translational landslide above the railroad cut. A large amount of soil erosion is visible throughout the area. The season is summer.
