Town:
Burlington
County:

State:
Vermont
Date:
1930 - 1940
Description:
This black and white photograph captures the Warner House at 96 Colchester Avenue in Burlington. A wide, paved road cuts across the foreground of the image. A stone curb, concrete sidewalk, and grassy parkway parallel the far side of the road. A wooden utility pole stands along the curb. The building is sited on a landscaped lawn on the opposite side of the street and faces slightly off to the right. The building has a wood frame covered in clapboards, is two-and-one-half stories in height, and has a hipped roof. A columned porch wraps around the first story. Wooden chairs provide seating on the porch, and flowers bloom in boxes that line the railings. A large awning shades the rear of the porch. A sign posted at the front of the building reads: "The Warner House, Tourists, Meals, Rooms, Bath." A light hangs over the sign. Large shrubs grow along the foundation and around the perimeter of the lot. A mature, deciduous tree grows on the front lawn. The rear of another building is visible to the right of the Warner House. The second building has a vine-covered porch and a large rear addition. A thick line of deciduous trees grows to the rear of the buildings. The thick foliage suggests a summer season. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 through the 1950s.
