This historic photograph documents an open pit at the Elizabeth Mine in Strafford, VT. In the foreground, a large trench has been excavated out of the side of a hill. The trench is partially filled with talus, and surrounded by a large wooden fence. On the bottom of the fence there is an illegible sign. On the left side of the trench are several spoil banks, around which wraps an earthen road that continues over the top of the hill. Surrounding the trench is a mix of conifer and deciduous tree species. Photograph by Collamer Abbott. Season is autumn.
