Esther Munroe Swift writes on 2005-1-13: The first ferry that went from Charlotte across to New York was operated by John McNeil(sometimes spelled McNeal. Although it was never a village in the usual sense of the word, the settlement that grew up around the ferry dock had several businesses & a hotel that was very popular in summer. McNeil became the first town clerk & the first town representative to the state legislature.
