Utility Lines

Utility poles line the roads of many historic images, and their wires crisscross the historic streetscapes. During the late 19th century both telephone and electric lines began to appear in Vermont. The process of bringing telephone access and electrical power to all parts of rural Vermont would continue into the 1960s. The mere presence of utility lines in an historic image can help narrow the date, but the time period can be narrowed further by examining the visual characteristics.
