Tools and Machinery

The tools and machinery used by farmers were very important to the success of the farm. Stronger, faster, and more efficient machines significantly improved the farm's production and the quality of life for the farmer. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a number of significant changes took place, most importantly the shift to motorized tractors. When possible, farmers upgraded their tools to the latest models. But many farmers could not readily afford new implements and continued to repair and reuse their old tools as long as possible. Therefore, in using farming tools and machinery to date an historic image, it is necessary to keep in mind old tools do not always indicate an early date.
