1860s

Although the Civil War disrupted fashion trends in the South, Northerners still published fashion magazines and were able to remain up-to-date during the decade. New England textile mills experienced cotton shortages, and a halt in shipping caused shortages of foreign materials. However, further developments in pattern systems and a more widespread use of the home sewing machine allowed both the urban and rural dwellers to remain well-dressed.
