The Wright Brothers flew their first primitive plane in 1903, and airplanes came into significant use during WWI. Air travel grew slowly in the United States during the late 1910s and 1920s. A few small airlines formed, and Air Mail Service began in 1917. Although not as significant to the cultural history of Vermont as maritime travel, the railroad, and the automobile, air travel has indeed played a role in the history of the Green Mountain State.
