The IT Standards Workgroup serves as a guiding influence on the direction of information technology investment at the University of Vermont. In the interest of ensuring faster, more consistent, and generally better support for your investments, the committee will set the standards for centrally supported and centrally managed technologies.
These standards will include all types of information technology purchased by the University. It is not the aim of this group to limit the choices available to members of the University community, but rather to recommend directions for technological investment to individuals and departments.
Our policies and procedures are explained at our web site.

Here you will find information about our currently adopted standards, notes on the standards currently under discussion, and ways that interested members of the UVM Community can participate in the work of the IT Standards Workgroup.
Below you will find several changes to the landscape of information technology at UVM. The Executive Summary list the points of information that are most likely to impact individuals and departments. More detail, including the decision-making process, is available online.
The Standards Workgroup selected several new products over the past year:

UVM's maintenance contract with Rhinosoft expires in July, 2002. We will continue to be able to use and distribute the version of FTP Voyager that is available on the expiration date.
However, there are some additional features of another product, CuteFTP Pro, which make it an attractive alternative. Specifically, GlobalScape's CuteFTP Pro supports SSH/SFTP as well as standard FTP.

Current supported operating systems and central services all support TCP/IP-based communication. In the interest of reducing network traffic and simplifying network and desktop configurations, CIT has proposed that IPX (used by older Novell products) and AppleTalk (used by older Macintosh applications) not be routed via the campus network. These protocols would continue to function within subnets for peer-to-peer networking.
