Unix services are provided by Enterprise Technology Services to the UVM community, including email and web hosting, network storage, shell access and other services.
Getting to know Zoo
"Zoo" is the colloquial name given to UVM's central Unix cluster. Zoo is comprised of many servers performing different tasks and represents a large portion of UVM's underlying information technology architecture. Some Zoo services include:
- Email: POP, IMAP, SMTP
- Network connectivity services: DHCP, DNS, 802.1X
- Network file storage ("zoofiles"): SMB, CIFS, AFP, FTP/SFTP
- Directory services: LDAP
- Web services: HTTP, HTTPS
- Authentication services: DCE/DFS, Kerberos, Shibboleth
While the services names and various acronyms may seem foreign, chances are high that if you use a computer at UVM, you use several services offered by the Zoo Unix cluster.
Zoo key verification
The first time you connect to Zoo, you may be prompted to verify a security key "fingerprint." This ensures you are communicating with the "real" Zoo server and not a foreign or malicious server masquerading as Zoo.
If the key fingerprints do not match, DO NOT submit your NetID password.
