General Information on Jabber-based Chat Services at UVM
UVM's Instant Messaging (IM) service uses your existing NetID account and password, so you don't need to create or register a new account. To connect to the service, you will need to configure the following options:
- user name: Your UVM NetID (e.g., mkapoodl)
- server or domain name: chat.uvm.edu
Account names are sometime specified like an email address ( e.g., mkapoodl@chat.uvm.edu ). Often this will be referred to as a Jabber ID.
Because you are communicating your username and password over the network, we require that your client support secure communications. The following options may need to be set:
- Use TLS if available (this is the preferred option) OR Use SSL instead of TLS if your client doesn't support TLS.
- Network Port: 5222
Some of these may be set by default, depending upon your software.
