Configuring iPod Touch/iPhone Devices For Use On the UVM Network

ETS currently provides support for the following activities on Apple Mobile devices:

The sections below cover the procedures to enable support for UVM wireless and email on your device.  All users should take note of the "prerequisites" section of this page.  If you wish to configure UVM email services on your device, you must first complete procedure for configuring the VPN client.

Prerequisites:

Before installing either profile, you must be running firmware version 2.0.0 or later on your device. You can verify your firmware version using either iTunes or the "Settings" app on your device.

From iTunes:

  1. Connect your device to your computer and launch iTunes
  2. When your device appears in the iTunes sidebar, click on its name.
  3. Click on the "summary" tab.
  4. Look for the information field "Software version".

From your iPhone/iPod Touch:

  1. Start the "Settings" Application
  2. Tap "General", then "About".
  3. Look under "Version".

If your version number begins with "1", you must update your device before installing the VPN and Email profiles.  iPod Touch users must purchase the iPod Touch 3.x software update ($10 plus tax) though the iTunes store.  The following URL will take you to the iPod Touch upgrade page in the  iTunes store:
https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/touchLandingPage
(Note that you must allow your computer to open this link in iTunes.  The page cannot be viewed from an ordinary web browser.)  NOTE: Users of University-owned iPod Touch devices are eligible for a free upgrade to the 2.x software release. Details on this free upgrade are available by request.

Users of iPhone devices are eligible for a free upgrade to the 3.x software.

In order to install the 3.x firmware update, you must be running iTunes version 8.2 or later.  You can get the latest version of iTunes from Apple at the following URL:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you already have installed iTunes, you can get the latest version using the Apple Update software on your machine.

If configuring your device from on the UVM Campus, you will need to connect to the "UVM" wireless network before proceeding.  To connect to "UVM":

  1. Start the "Settings" application on your device.
  2. Tap the "Wi-Fi" entry.
  3. From the list of available networks, select "UVM".  When you have connected to the network, a blue check mark will appear next to the "UVM" name.

Configure Access to the UVM Wireless Network

If you are configuring your Apple mobile device using your broadband network, or if you are using a WiFi network outside of UVM, you can save time by pre-installing the UVM WPA2-Enterprise WiFi profile before attempting to connect to the UVM Wireless network.

  • To pre-install the UVM Wi-Fi Profile:
    • On mobile Safari, go to the URL: https://scripts.uvm.edu/apple
    • Select the "uvm_wifi_v3.mobileconfig" file from the list of available mobileconfig files.  Note: The Profile should bear the signature "iPCU CA 65f481a7-2577-446f-aeed-832b5cf096be".
    • When prompted, select the "Install" option.
    • You will then be prompted to enter your UVM NetID and password to use the profile. Enter your NetID, hit "Next", then your password, then "Next", and hit "done" when you receive the "Profile Installed" dialog
    • When you are in-range of the UVM wireless network, your device should connect automatically.
  • To configure Wi-Fi Manually:

Configuring support for UVM Mail:

Apple mobile devices include support for the IMAP mail protocol which is used on UVM's centrally supported mail servers. Also included is support for address lookups using UVM's central directory server.  Please note that downloading mail to an easily portable device such as an iPhone can have  security implications. These devices can be lost easily.  If you take no security precautions, anyone who recovers the device will be able to read all of your UVM mail messages and impersonate mail from you.  For this reason, we urge you to install a passcode policy in addition to a UVM Mail configuration.

  1. On mobile Safari, go to the URL: https://scripts.uvm.edu/apple
  2. Select the UVM Email mobileconfig file for your Apple Mobile device version from the list of available mobileconfig files
  3. When prompted, select the "Install" option.
  4. You will then be prompted to provide some additional information to complete the configuration. Owing to limitations in the structure of the config file, you will have to enter you credentials three times before completing the process. Enter your NetID, hit "Next", then your password, then "Next", and hit "done" when you receive the "Profile Installed" dialog
    1. First, you must enter a friendly name for your new email account profile on the device. (A default value of "UVM Mail Account" is provided).
    2. Next, you must enter your email address as it will appear on messages from you. (We recommend using the firstname.lastname@uvm.edu format)
    3. Enter your UVM NetID when prompted from your IMAP account username
    4. Enter your UVM NetID password when prompted for the outgoing mail server password.
    5. The next two dialogs will appear much like the previous two... you will need to re-enter your UVM NetID and password for the outgoing (SMTP) mail server.
  5. If you entered all information correctly, you will see a "profile installed successfully message. You then can access your email by going to the home page of your device, and tapping the "Mail" application.
  6. If you do not see the "Profile Installed" dialog, you will will need to return to Safari and repeat the steps above.
  7. You may want to update the friendly name that will be appended to mail messages sent from your device. To do this:
    1. Open the "Settings" app.
    2. Tap "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"
    3. Tap "UVM Mail Account"
    4. Tap the area next to "Name" under "IMAP Account Information". Enter your name as you would like it displayed in email messages.
    5. Exit the Settings app by pressing the home button.

Selecting and Installing a Passcode Policy:

After completing the configuration, you will be required to enter a passcode each time you unlock your device.

  1. On mobile Safari, go to the URL: https://scripts.uvm.edu/apple
  2. Select one of the two available passcode policies by tapping on one of the ".mobileconfig" links.  The Mobileconfig page  provides information on the settings enforced with each policy, and situations in which each policy is recommended.  Be sure to select the file that matches your version of the Apple mobile operating system.
  3. When prompted, select the "Install" option.
  4. You now will be prompted to set a passcode for your device.  See the notes provided with each passcode policy to determine your passcode strength requirements.  NOTE: If you use the minimum recommended passcode strength policy , and limit your passcode to four numeric values, you will be presented with a more simple numeric keypad for entering your passcode in the future.  Be advised that while use of mixed alpha-numeric passcodes is a good security practice, but we recognize that the Apple Mobile QWERTY keypad can be frustrating to use and thus allow for numeric-only passcodes.
  5. You will need to re-enter your passcode to proceed

Removing Policies:

Policies can be removed from your device if they are no longer wanted or needed.

  • From the Home Screen, tap the "Settings" application.
  • From "Settings", tap the "General" option.
  • Scroll down to and tap the "Profiles" option.
  • Locate the Profile that you wish to remove, them tap it.
  • Tap the red "Remove" button.
Note:  If you remove a passcode policy, your passcode policy will no longer be enforced, but your passcode will still be active.  You will have to go to the "Settings" app, then select "General" and "Passcode Lock" to modify or disable your device passcode.
