Configuring Apple Mail for UVM Mail

Configuring Apple Mail for use with the UVM Mail System

In order to use Apple Mail you must perform several simple configuration tasks. 

Our instructions make several assumptions:

  • You are using a Mac OS X operating system
  • You are starting your Mac for the first time
  • This is the first time you have configured Apple Mail
  • You are a UVM Affiliate and have activated your Network ID (Zoo account) (see http://www.uvm.edu/account/ if you have not done this yet).
  • You know your Email 'Alias' (the 'Firstname.Lastname' version of your account name).  You can look this up at http://www.uvm.edu/directory/

If this is the first time you have turned on your Mac you will be prompted with a "Set Up Mail" screen. Use the following information to fill in the fields as you are prompted:

your Network ID (Zoo username)

Once your system is up and running, start Apple Mail from the dock or from the Applications folder:



Type your full name, UVM email address (generally your UVM NetID), and password.



If you receive the "Mail cannot send your password securely to the server" dialog box as seen below,
click on "Setup Manually".



In the Incoming Mail Server window, please make sure the following settings are configured:
  • Account Type: IMAP
  • Description: You can leave the default or change it to match your name
  • Incoming Mail Server: imap.uvm.edu
  • User Name: UVM NetID (please type your UVM NetID, example: mkapoodl)
  • Pasword: Type your UVM NetID password
Click "Continue"



In the Outgoing Mail Server window, please make sure the following settings are configured:
  • Description: (optional) - You can leave this field blank
  • Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.uvm.edu
  • Select the checkbox for "Use only this server"
  • "Use Authentication" checkbox should already be selected.  If not, please select it.
  • Username: UVM NetID (please type your UVM NetID, example: mkapoodl)
  • Password: Type your UVM NetID password
Click "Continue".



In the Outgoing Mail Security window:
  • Select the checkbox for "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
  • Authentication mode is set for Password
Click "Continue".



Verify that all the information is accurate in the Account Summary window.  If you need to make a change, click on the "Go Back" button.
"Take account online" checkbox is selected.
Click "Create".



In the toolbar, click on "Mail", then choose "Preferences".



In the Preference window, click on Accounts (with the @ icon).
Click on the "Advanced" tab (as circled in red).

Make sure "Use SSL" checkbox is selected and the Port number is 993.

Click on any icon in the Preference window or exit.
You will be prompted to save.  
Click on "Save".



Your Apple Mail application is now configured for the UVM mail system.
