Enterprise Technology Services' Suggested Computer Hardware Configurations for the University of Vermont
Updated 10/25/2011
The configurations below are designed to meet the needs of most students, faculty, and staff at UVM, and therefore are "mid-range" models. The specs and pricing below are typical of our best-selling models as of the date at the top of the page. Prices do not include a network cable or Microsoft Office.
If your computing needs are more demanding, such as research and instructional computing, or photo/video editing, consider configurations with a faster processor, more memory (RAM), larger/faster hard drive, higher performance video controller, or an extra (or larger) display.
If affordability is important, then less advanced configurations at lower costs may be your choice: a slower processor, smaller hard drive, or perhaps a smaller display. We do not recommend reducing the amount of memory as it is often the single best performance booster at minimal cost.
Perhaps you are looking for a tablet computer, or a small, lightweight laptop well suited for business travel. These specialized computers tend to be higher-priced and less powerful than traditional laptops.
Several such pre-configured bundles are on our Apple and Dell price lists, and we can also get you a quote for a customized configuration. Consultants are available to discuss your computing needs, and to help you make software choices. We recommend that whenever possible, it's best to use software for which UVM offers support. Please see the Recommended Software list and our Software Price List.
Students enrolled in the School of Business Administration: Please see BSAD's Mobile Computing Requirement page.
Students are encouraged to check out the prices, options, and online ordering available on our Back-to-School (BTS) website from June to September. BTS Bundle pricing on that site does include Microsoft Office and a network cable.

| * - UVM Network Ready: preloaded with currently supported Antivirus program, SSH/SFTP Client, Firefox, and Thunderbird. Departmental systems also include the current version of MS-Office available via the Microsoft Campus Agreement (MCA) and Oracle Calendar (on Windows computers only; Oracle Calendar is not compatible with OS X Lion). Systems sold to students, faculty, and staff do not include MS-Office, which is available for purchase separately. Systems sold to faculty and staff for personal use are usually not opened by Depot staff, and so come only with the OS and software shipped from the manufacturer; MS-Office Work-at-Home media is available for qualified employees. | ||||||
