macOS 10.15 (“Catalina”) Upgrade Precautions

Apple has released macOS 10.15 (“Catalina”), and it is now available for download via the App Store.

Enterprise Technology Services is currently advising against upgrading to this new version. Some software will not function properly on this new operating system and will require developers to provide a compatibility update before it will run under macOS 10.15. Any new OS release will introduce bugs, so delaying your upgrade by a month or two should result in a more stable and problem-free experience.

The macOS 10.15 upgrade may also appear as an update in the App Store as a “free upgrade”, listed above the standard software updates. Installing the standard updates will not automatically install the new operating system, but please avoid the “Update All” option at this time. ETS will update IT Discuss when apps commonly used by the UVM community have been updated to run on Mac OS 10.15.

New Macintosh machines will ship with 10.15 preinstalled, in most cases these systems cannot be downgraded. This is not meant to discourage the purchase of a new system at this time, rather a note of something to be aware of.

macOS image deployment (Imagr) has been updated to support macOS 10.15 Catalina.
