Both tutorials include a history of the ethical guidelines and federal regulations governing research with human subjects; an overview of HIPAA; a description of the roles and responsibilities of the research investigators and other groups for protecting human subjects; the terms of the University of Vermont's Assurance with the Office for Human Research Protections; and the research categories that are governed by the regulations and by the Assurance; the different levels of IRB review, from research that is exempt to special considerations for vulnerable populations; protocol submission requirements; the elements of informed consent; and the conduct of research, and the reporting of unanticipated problems to subjects or others including local adverse events.
