Recent Labor History Among Staff at UVM

In early May 2012, the Vermont Labor Relations Board (VLRB) determined that the University Staff Union–NEA met the required showing of interest in support of its petition for an election by University clerical, specialized and technical employees for collective bargaining representation. In compliance with Vermont statutes, the NEA's petition was supported by signature cards signed by no less than 30 percent of employees in the proposed bargaining unit.

The Board also determined that a separate group formed by United Staff met the required showing of interest in support of its petition for intervention in the election of a collective bargaining representative. This meant that United Staff was named on the election ballot along with the University Staff Union-NEA. In compliance with Vermont statutes, the United Staff's intervention petition was supported by signature cards signed by no less than 10 percent of employees in the proposed bargaining unit.

On September 18 and 19, 2012 an election was held in which nearly 800 clerical, specialized and technical employees cast ballots. None of the three choices on the ballot received more than fifty percent of the votes, so a run-off election between the top two choices was scheduled for November 13 and 14, 2012. In the runoff election where the choice was between: (1) being represented by University Staff Union–NEA, or (2) not being represented by a union, a majority of non-represented staff voting chose to not be represented by a union.
