Join us on September 12 for presentations celebrating the diversity of the UVM community as we hear from two staff members who have journeyed far to join us.
Sanna Kuku was born in Khartoum, Sudan in the early 1980's. The area was relatively peaceful during Sanna’s childhood, but with tensions rising and fighting becoming more widespread, Sanna's husband left for Egypt in 2001, hoping to secure refugee status for his young family. Sanna followed in 2002 with their twin 2-year old boys. Together they lived and worked in Cairo for two years before coming to Vermont as political refugees.
Issouf Ouattara was born in Ivory Coast. He was sent to boarding school in Burkina Faso at the age of 12 to avoid political unrest. This would be a watershed experience as Issouf would never again live with his family. After student unrest over the great divide in wealth in the country led to several educational delays, Issouf finally attained a master's degree in business law. He married and had two sons before the precarious economic climate in Burkina Faso convinced Issouf to come to the United States, learn English, and seek the opportunity to work toward an advanced degree here.
Presentations at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Seating is limited. Register through PeopleSoft HR > Self Service > Learning and Development:
