Inside the Online Job Application Process
We've gathered some helpful information to give you insight into how the University's application process works.
Tips for Applying
- The UVM jobs website is updated daily. Check the site at least twice a week at www.uvmjobs.com or subscribe to the RSS feed for regular updates.
- Be persistent and consistent when applying. The UVM search process is thorough and it takes time.
- Apply for any position of interest to you for which you are qualified. It does not reflect negatively on you if you apply for multiple positions.
- When determining whether you are qualified for the position, consider both the minimum qualifications and the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Complete the online application thoroughly. Paper documents are not accepted.
- Attach a resume and cover letter when applying for each job. These should be tailored specifically for each job under consideration. Use the job posting as a guide to help you write your application documents.
- Edit the online employment application, cover letter and resume before you apply for a job. The online system does not allow edits or corrections after the application has been submitted for a particular job.
- Cover letters may be addressed to “Dear Hiring Supervisor” or “Dear Search Committee.” The names of hiring supervisors are not disclosed in the application process.
- When responding to the minimum salary question on the employment application, consider “open,” “flexible” or “negotiable.”
- Use action verbs (and the active voice) when describing your skills and experience in the application, resume and cover letter.
- Provide professional, not personal references.
- All applications are routed directly to the hiring supervisor. There is no pre-screening in the employment process.
