Unit Orientation

Orienting Employees within the Unit

To help supervisors create an orientation plan for a unit, consider the following suggestions:

Preparing Your Unit

  • Set up department personnel file (resume and offer/acceptance letter)
  • Plan for departmental translation needs
  • Schedule appointments for key introductions (supervisors, deans, directors, etc.)
  • Schedule departmental custodial or maintenance or housekeeping training
  • Schedule departmental lab safety and hazardous materials safety training
  • Coordinate departmental applications and services
  • Coordinate departmental network login and computer services
  • Add employee to distribution lists (including e-mail )
  • Order or print nameplates
  • Order and organize office furniture
  • Order and organize office supplies (Burlington phone book, UVM phone book, nametags, etc.)
  • Order and organize personal protective equipment
  • Order and organize tools
  • Will the employee need lockout/tag-out training? (Training is conducted by individual departments.
  • Will the employee need confined space procedures training? (Training is conducted by individual departments.
