Employment Information for Faculty & Staff

H1N1 Flu

Mindful of a possible H1N1 flu outbreak during the 2009-2010 academic year, the University has developed these guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) based on existing University policies and procedures to provide the UVM community with useful H1N1 and seasonal flu information. These guidelines and FAQs apply only for the 2009-2010 flu season to any case of influenza-like illness, regardless of whether it has been medically diagnosed as novel H1N1.

Even if absentee rates are high, the University expects to remain open. For these reasons, all current academic, student, and employment policies will continue to remain in effect. Most of the guidelines for employment-related policies and procedures will be the same for represented and non-represented employees. Contact us if you have questions about these guidelines.

General Employment Information for Faculty & Staff

The following information may be of interest to all employees of the University. Faculty and staff who are members of a collective bargaining unit should consult with their Union leadership with regard to provisions for specific benefits under applicable collective bargaining agreements.

Will UVM provide flu shots for faculty and staff?
Seasonal flu: UVM plans to provide a seasonal flu vaccine clinic ($10 co-pay) for faculty, staff and retirees who have a University health plan with either Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont or MVP Healthcare. Employees and retirees who have a University health plan may also get a seasonal flu shot from their primary care provider. Spouses and dependents on a University health plan, as well as employees who have waived a University health plan, or are otherwise ineligible for coverage under a University health plan, will need to get their seasonal flu vaccine from their primary care provider.
H1N1: Information about vaccination plans for H1N1 flu will be posted here as it becomes available.
If I am sick and don’t have direct deposit, how will I get my paycheck?
If you are at home sick, you may call your department to request that your check be mailed to you at home. This will cause a delay in receiving your check. You can avoid this delay by opting now to have your paycheck deposited directly into your bank account. You can sign up for direct deposit in PeopleSoft. (For assistance, see the step-by-step guide entitled Maintaining Direct Deposit Information on the HRS website). If you have questions about the direct deposit process, you may call the HRS Employee Information Center at 656-3150.
If I don’t have direct deposit, would a family member be allowed to pick up my paycheck?
A family member would need a signed letter of authorization from you in order to pick up your paycheck in your home department.
Will my University health plan cover medical expenses associated with treatment for H1N1 flu?
Yes. All current policies, procedures and co-pays for your present health plan will remain in effect. If you receive treatment for flu-related illness, your coverage will be the same as for any other flu-like illness under your medical plan.
If I get the flu while I am working, does this entitle me to Workers’ Compensation benefits?
It is not likely. Workers’ Compensation benefits are provided for any illness or injury that is directly related to the performance of your job. In the case of a widespread illness that affects many people in the community, such as the H1N1 flu, it would be very difficult for you to demonstrate that the performance of your work was the cause of your illness. Therefore, it is unlikely you would receive any Workers’ Compensation benefits.
What assistance is available to help me cope with the emotional impact of an influenza outbreak?
The University’s confidential Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to assist employees who may have special concerns related to an H1N1 flu outbreak. The EAP Office can be reached at 656-2100.
