Distinguishing Characteristics: MECHANIC TRADES Career Progression

This is a two-tiered progression within the Mechanic Trades. The progression for Mechanic is to Mechanic Supervisor or Fleet Mechanic.

MECHANIC
FLEET MECHANIC MECHANIC SUPERVISOR
Nature of Work
  • Perform general repairs and maintenance of equipment and machinery in support of University operations
  • Use judgment in mechanical applications within established guidelines
  • Perform complex repairs and maintenance on vehicles, equipment and machinery in support of University operations
  • Use judgment in prioritizing work activities and in decisions regarding mechanical applications within established guidelines
  • Perform complex repairs and maintenance on vehicles, automotive equipment and machinery in support of University operations
  • Use judgment in prioritizing work activities and in decisions regarding mechanical applications within established guidelines
Expertise
  • Assist with and perform routine maintenance on equipment, University vehicles and/or mechanical systems
  • Assist in determining/resolving equipment/mechanical malfunctions
  • Maintain and update parts inventory and repair procedure records
  • Use general knowledge of industry standards and University guidelines
  • May provide mechanical assistance and vehicle breakdown sites
  • Use desktop applications
  • May operate University vehicle on/off campus
  • Perform routine to complex maintenance/troubleshooting on equipment, University vehicles and/or mechanical systems
  • Provide leadership and assist in identifying priority work orders for repairs or related services
  • Inspect and evaluate results and ensure completion of projects and assignments
  • Use comprehensive knowledge of University and external procedures, standards and regulations
  • Maintain and oversee documentation and records
  • May provide mechanical assistance at vehicle breakdown sites
  • Use desktop applications
  • May operate University vehicle on/off campus
  • Perform routine to complex maintenance/troubleshooting on equipment, University vehicles and machines
  • Provide leadership and assist in identifying priority work orders for repairs or related services

Conditions
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Specific physical requirements may apply based on job functions

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma and three years’ specific experience required
  • Specialized certification or ability to obtain within six months may be required
  • Valid Vermont driver's license and Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain both and driver's check may be required
  • High school diploma and four years’ specific experience required
  • Specialized certification or ability to obtain within six months may be required
  • Valid Vermont driver's license or ability to obtain and driver’s check required. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain may be required
