A publication of the University of Vermont Honors College June 2008

It is gratifying to write to you following a most successful year. Last month we commemorated the accomplishments of the first full class of Honors College Scholars, as is related in the Newsletter. For the University, this milestone represents the culmination of a decade-long march towards making honors education available for students from all seven undergraduate colleges and schools. Indeed, as President Fogel stated in his remarks at our ceremony, the achievements of our pioneering students fit well within an even longer trajectory of intellectual advance at the University. For the College itself, it means that we are now entering a period of early maturity, having seen students progress through all four years of our program. So it is an exciting time. Dean Rizvi's Message

"Ripeness is all," President Daniel Fogel said, quoting Edgar from Shakespeare’s King Lear, in his commencement speech to the Honors College first graduating class, sitting in front of him in their black, bright green banner draped robes in Ira Allen Chapel on May 17th. Speaking on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon to the many family members and friends who had assembled there to commemorate this historic occasion, President Fogel recalled the time he first mentioned the idea for an Honors College at UVM. Honors College Ceremony - May 17th, 2008

Beginning with the fall 2008 semester, the Honors College will offer a new First Year Seminar for all incoming HCOL students. Titled, "The Pursuit of Knowledge:Disciplines, Universities, and Engagement"; the seminar will challenge students to think and reflect upon what it means to be a University student in the rapidly changing 21st century. The seminar course description and extensive reading list can be found on our web site: HC First Year Curriculum. The seminar is the brainchild of Joseph Acquisto, Professor of Romance Languages. We had a chance recently to sit down with him to talk about the genesis of the course, and what motivated him and the others involved in its design to want to offer a new first year seminar to replace the one that HCOL students have been taking since the college's inception.
