A publication of the University of Vermont Honors College December 2007
This point in December finds the Honors College in a busy, quiet mode.
I write this in the middle of final exam week. The living room,
multi-purpose room, and study lounges are full of students tapping term
papers into their laptops and groups preparing for exams.
Amid this intense, focused activity, and as the fall semester draws to a close, it's hard to imagine that in a matter of months we will have the first graduating class of the Honors College. Together with the Honors College's Junior-Senior Advisory Board, we have invented what we expect will become an enduring tradition. The Honors College will celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2008 on the day before the University Commencement. We hope you'll mark your calendars and join us on Saturday, May 17, at 3:30 p.m. in Ira Allen Chapel for this ceremony. As we look forward to that date, we have the opportunity to reflect on our activities so far this semester. It's a pleasure to present them to you in this newsletter. We look forward to hearing your comments and reactions.

With this issue, the Honors College E-Newsletter will begin a continuing series of Faculty Spotlight features, directed upon a faculty member teaching one of the Honors College’s sophomore seminars. We look forward in future issues to introduce to the Honors College community many of these highly talented scholars. Interview with Drs. Patti O'Brien and Paul Schaberg
Students gathered in the University Heights North living room on the afternoon of November 2nd, for a special pre-concert talk and performance by master Kora musician and Grammy nominee, Mamadou Diabate, who would be performing with his Ensemble that evening at UVM Recital Hall. Sponsored by the UVM Honors College and the UVM Global Village, Diabate was introduced by Natalie Neuert, of the Lane Series, to those assembled in the packed room.
Although by Mid-October
it was hard to recall the warm and
homework-free days of summer, six Honors College students were able to
recreate the feel of summer on October 24th at an event entitled,
“I Know What You Did Last Summer”. Students
provided their fellow classmates with presentations about how they had
spent their summer vacations while all in attendance enjoyed a
delicious meal from American Flatbread. The wide range of these
students’ experiences gave their classmates insight into
their own passions and pursuits as well as inspiration and ideas for
how they could spend their own future summers.
