professor in class

Through their honors course work, students work closely with outstanding faculty from a range of academic subjects, from political science and English to nursing, business, and education.

Because the Patrick Leahy Honors College is multidisciplinary, drawing faculty from throughout the university, students may work with honors faculty who also hold appointments in these colleges and schools:

  • College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
  • College of Arts and Sciences
  • College of Education and Social Services
  • College of Engineering and Mathematics
  • College of Nursing and Health Sciences
  • Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources
  • Grossman School of Business
  • Larner College of Medicine

Core Faculty

In the first year, students meet the Patrick Leahy Honors College's core faculty, who teach the two-semester sequence, "The Pursuit of Knowledge" and "Ways of Knowing." Together, they discuss the broad philosophical issues underpinning the idea of knowledge; the ways in which knowledge is organized at the university into different disciplines;  and the ways in which individuals' and communities' relationships to knowledge and education as well as to issues like race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and disability determine the shape and complexity of peoples' lives.   As the students work through the reading and writing assignments for these courses, and as they bring their responses to class discussions, they are challenged to apply the course material to matters relevant to their own lives and educations.

Sophomore Seminar Faculty

In the sophomore year, Patrick Leahy Honors College (PLHC) students choose each semester from a wide-ranging list of twelve to sixteen seminars taught by distinguished faculty from across the university (including the Larner College of Medicine).  The seminars are designed to introduce students to the work of specialized academic research.

Guest Faculty

The first-year course also invites faculty, administrators, and other professionals (including professional artists) from UVM and elsewhere to address PLHC students and the greater campus community in plenary lectures throughout the year. Through these encounters, students are exposed to a wide range of approaches to knowledge and education that complement the reading and writing assignments for the course.
