Carbon Footprint:
Light Bulbs...an easy way to Save!!
[back to front] [back to friday]

Energy usage for light in the homes of 2007 Winter Weekend GIV students, faculty, and staff:

Each green bar is the amount of watts used in one of our homes

the
grey bars above the green are the number of watts saved in each home based on the fluorescent bulbs we already use.

Today, we converve a lot of energy, but we could conserve a lot more!!

The bar on the far left shows how many watts of electricity we would use if all of our bulbs were incandescent.

The middle bar shows where we are
right now with our electricity usage for light

and the
the bar on the right shows the amount of energy we would be using if all were fluorescent.

We still need to change 66% of the bulbs in our homes.

So Lets Switch 'EM!

If each bulb in each of our houses on average is on for 1 hour everyday:

we release ~75,000 lbs of CO2 each year for lighting only!

if all bulbs were fluorescent, we would save ~
50,000 lbs of CO2.

That is enough to cancel the CO2 emission of an entire home for a year.
