| TEXTURE: |
| PIT 1: This pit was dug only a couple meters from the stream, so the the soil was extremely wet and muddy. The O horizon consisted mostly of twigs and leaves. Horizon A was gritty and had some small pebbles in it, and horizon B was similar to A, although it was slightly more sand-like. Horizon C, the deepest horizon we found, was the finest and smoothest of the layers. |
| PIT 2: This pit was dug further up the hill where the ground was drier. The O horizon still consisted of leaves, small twigs, and pine needles that had fallen from the surrounding trees. Horizon A was slightly grainy and horizon B was also grainy, although it also clumped more. C horizon was more grainy than B and damp, while horizon D, although similar to C, contained more pebbles. Horizon E was damp and grainy, without pebbles, horizon F was wet and fine, and clumped well, and G horizon was the finest layer and was hard and flakey. |
| PIT 3: Pit 3 was dug at the highest elevation and was the furthest away from the stream. Once again, the O horizon consisted mostly of fallen leaves and pine needles. Horizon A was light, soft, dry and crumbly. B horizon was very fine and smooth, and also dry. Horizon C was almost identical to horizon B. |

| PIT 1: The colors of the
horizons in the first pit were mostly browns. The A layer was a
dark, dark brown, while the B layer was a slightly lighter color that
had more yellow in it. Layer C was the lightest color and was a
slightly reddish-brown. |
PIT 2: The color of the A
horizon in Pit 2 was dark brown with a slight gray tint. Horizon
B was a very yellowish-brown color. Layer C was similar to B,
only slightly darker. Layer D was also similar to B and C, but it
was darker. Horizons E, F, and G were very similar, and they were
very yellowish-brown soils. |
PIT 3: Horizon A in Pit 3
was a dark brown, while the B horizon was slightly lighter than
A. The C horizon was much more yellow than the other two horizons. |
![]() This is an example of one of the pages we used to test the color of the soils. We compared the color of the soils to the color chips in the book to find the color. We chose the closest match we could find for each horizon of each pit. |
