The data shows that different plant species thrive in different
habitats and at different elevations. However, it is unclear
which variables affect this distribution the most. Light
intensity, canopy coverage, ground coverage, slope, and elevation,
among other variables, may all affect the distribution of plant species
in an area. Further tests are required to make any
conclusions. The variables mentioned before would have to be
isolated from other variables in these tests.
The results of the coring (taking core samples from the trees
identified in the circular 0.01 hectare plots) show that the diameter
of the tree is not necessarily correlated with its age. For
example, one of the white pines with a diameter of 73 cm was found to
be younger than a hemlock tree nearby with a diameter of 35.3 cm.
However, perhaps trees of the same species may be the same age if they
have the same diameter. For example, three hemlocks that had
diameters ranging from 40 to 46 cm, all were estimated to be 140 years
old.
