Throughout the week, the Shoreline group observed numerous areas of the shore. Groups studied things including erosion, pH and conductivity, zebra mussels, tree distribution, soil, benthic macro invertebrates and wildflowers.
The wildflower group performed various procedures to determine the type of flower, its location an d a short description.
Each time we sited a new flower, we took a picture of the flower and then used the different characteristics of the flower to look it up in several different books. After we named the flower, we then shortly described it, using the most prominent traits. We then used the GPS system to record where along the shore the flower was located. If we saw the flower more than once, we recorded its different locations.
By doing these steps, we were then able to see a pattern of the certain types of flowers that can be found along the shoreline at Shelburne Farms. This project was a lot of fun and very informative. The wildflowers are truly amazing!
