For our research, we visited the University of Vermont's library. Specifically, we visited the Special Collections and Maps rooms. We also visited the South Burlington Recreation Department and looked at the records of the park.

Construction of the park was started in 1888 by Edward Hatch. He created the paths and outlooks as well as a pavilion, most of which we now use to enjoy the natural beauty of the park. Along with this, he developed the East Woods for his family's personal use. Later on several lake houses were developed for the use of other families. The area remained in the posession of the Hatch's until 1970 when Victoria L. Hatch sold the property to the town of South Burlington. They took down and burned the lake houses as well as expanding the beach for public use along with building the bath houses. They continue to maintain the park for your pleasure.

Our research is related to all the other groups working at Red Rocks. We found out that the park-keepers cleaned up dead logs and other natural debris. This is related to the soil pH group in that it affects the return of organic matter to the soil. Our research relates to the utility group because the community along the boundaries of the park has been encrouching upon the park and their waste affects the composition of the runoff water into Lake Champlain. Also, the lake houses built before the city owned the park created clearings in the park which directly affects the age and type of trees growing there now.
