Tinder Polypore (Fomes fomentarius)-

Size: 2"- 8" wide

Description: The Tinder Polypore is hoofshaped, gray to graybrown or grayblack.

It has a hard horny thick crust and is velvety to smooth to touch.

Habitat: It grows on the sides of living trees- mostly deciduous including birch, cherry, popular, maple, beech, and hickory.

Fomes fomitopsis-

This is the look-alike to the Tinder Polypore. The flesh is whitish vs. brownish.

Birch polypore (Piptoporus betulinus)-

Size: 1"-10" wide

Description: The Birch Polypore is kidney to semi-circle shaped. The color is white to brown with an easily dented cover.

Carving is very easy to do on the bottem of the mushroom cap.

Habitat: Found on living to dead birch trees.

The left picture is of the mushroom carved. The right picture is of the mushroom on the tree. The flat white side is the underneath of the mushroom.

 

Violet Toothed Polypore (Trichaptum biformis)-

Size: 3/8" - 3" wide

Description: It is semicircular with white to grayish tones and pink/violet along the edges.

The underside is also pinkish/violet.

Habitat: It is found on dead deciduous and coniferous wood.

Mossy Maze Polypore (Cerrena unicolora)-

Size: 1/4" - 3" wide

Description: It is wide and overlapping usually appearing to be white and grayish covered in algae. It is stiff and dry.

Habitat: Usually found on deciduous wood.
