Geology

Brook and Hires Trails of the Green Mountain Audubon Nature Center

Here's a sample of the rock found in the stream

Bedrock Geology-The bedrock in the area is found all over, and the foliation differs from outcrop to outcrop.

Surficial Geology-

Terraces-are differences in the altitude of the land in spots where the once large River, and now small brook has cut through the land and changed the geography. In each of these seperate areas, there is a difference in the vegetation.

The water meanders through the Sherman Hollow Brook and carves this gully through the land.

Trees that are curved like these show that the land is moving underneath the trees, and the trees have to curve to make up for that change. This land has moved a lot recently.

Landslide-Here you can see the erosion that has occurred in the land and changed the way it looks on the hillside.

Here the stream channel has changed its path to a different route leaving an empty bed.

We all sat for a while to hear about the geological bedrock history of the earth, and of our Upland site. Laura was more than happy to enlighten us.

These are pictures of Riparian Gullies that were formed by the constant running of water over the rocks. They have the same phyllitic schist like the rocks you saw earlier.

Shana and Karri worked hard on studying the geology of the Upland Forest with our VERY helpful leader Laura
