Snow Pitting is the latest fad! We're all doing it, because it is so much fun and it's educating. Right now I'm sure you're wondering what the heck snow pitting is, so I'll tell you.

Digging snow pits is a method of testing snow pack, which can really help predicting the chances of avalanches. The pit alone may not tell much about the existing conditions, so experts (Us.....yeah right!) have to perform many tests, such as observing how many different layers of snow there were, getting the individual layers temperatures, their densities, hardness, and crystal types (round, stellar, or dendritic). After gathering that information with nice toys from a yellow snow kit, then the fun tests begin! The Bonsai Jump is a pretty cool way of checking for weak snow layers, and all you need to do it with is a shovel, a bunch of friends, and hopefully three feet of snow!! A two foot trench (can vary depending on the depth of the snow) is dug in the snow on an incline, then... the friends come in! The friends, from above, leap down close to the trench, and wherever the snow breaks was the weakest layer. Also, you get to see your friends tumble down the hill screaming!

Okay, now that you know all there is to know about snow pitting, I hope you can enjoy the thrill in your own household.
