The Snow Core procedure is a nway of measuring the water content in snow. It's an important test for hydrologists to do during spring thaw so they can predictict the amount of flood waters in store.
This test requires highly sophisticated echnology......a PVC pipe, and
a scale. So maybe it's not the most sophisiticated, but it sure does tell
a lot about spring thaws. To do this procedure you have to take your PVC
pipe, mass it, then run to a nearby snow mountain, thrust the pipe as far
down into the snow as possible, and give it a few twists. The twists are
to grab some dirt at the bottom of the pipe to hold the contents inside.
Then the pipe with snow (only the snow, the dirt must be removed) must be
weighed in grams, and then the pipe mass is subtracted to give only the
mass of the snow. The final mass then must be multiplied by 100, then divide
by 20 which is the crossectional area of the tube. That number that you
get is the water equivilant in depth. Thanks to Jenna. See our Data under
the contents bar.
