On Friday, February 26, 1999, we met at Dewey Hall, on the Vermont College campus in Montpelier, VT.
On Saturday, February 27, 1999, we went to Mount Mansfield
to collect data
data collection meant digging snow pits and examining different snow layers,
(data from our observations)
we dug three pits at different points along Smuggler's Notch

along the way we stopped to slide and learn important self-arrest techniques
At the top of the notch we tried to simulate a small avalanche
Once all of our observations were complete, we began our descent
some people walked, some used sleds, some used shovels
