We spent our days
working
in the field at this site, the Indian Brook Reservoir.
Most days we battled
with
the rain, and of course, we lost.
We learned about
many new
areas or topics, such as geology, soil and water chemistry, tree
identification
and wildlife.
Here we listened to
Helen
Mango (a geologist) as she explained the geologic history of the
reservoir.
On Tuesday, our
second day
in the field we canoed around the reservoir taking depth
measurements(and
other measurements) to discover more about the water in the area. We
carried
our canoes through the woods to a leech infested bog, where we also
took
measurements. After we returned to the actual reservoir we learned how
to
"rescue" canoes. But in reality we learned how to tip the canoes!!
It was a lot of fun after a hard day of work in the field.
On Thursday we spent
the
morning on Lake Champlain in the Melosira, a UVM research boat.
We learned about
what they
actually research and how they go about conducting that research. The
Melosira
crew studies the water quality of the lake and also the invasive
species
of the lake. Examples of such invasive species are zebra mussels and
millfoil.
These species are non-native and come into an area and completely take
over.
This is us looking
overboard,
no butts about it.
These are the different sections of
the reservoir
that we researched, click on them and learn more about Indian Brook
