CH2M HILL, 1998-2000. Mr. Bierman-Lytle was Executive Director of CH2M HILL's sustainable development practice. CH2M HILL, one of the largest environmental engineering firms in the world, established an international presence in identifying projects where sustainable development principles are applicable, where innovative approaches are implementable, and where efficient resource management strategies that result in state-of-the-art buildings and developments that meet the 'triple bottom line' can be applied. Mr. Bierman-Lytle was the catalyst for developing a methodology to 'measure' sustainability in construction projects; this rigorous methodology, called SD Metrics Methodology and Benchmarks, is engaged in every project to determine the commercial viability balanced against social and environmental criteria.
Mr. Bierman-Lytle is architect-in-charge for the Earth Centre, a mixed-use project in Costa Rica that will serve as the gateway to Costa Rica's national parks and nature preserves. The facility will offer an "edutainment" component and national convention center to communicate the importance of Costa Rica's ecosystem to its visitors by merging the learning experience with entertainment technologies. This project serves as a model of sustainable development principles and was highlighted at the Kyoto Summit as an example for future sustainable development projects.
Another sustainable development project, Arrowhead Springs, is nearing the first stages of construction in San Bernardino, California. This project is similar to the Earth Centre project, only much larger in scope and size. Mr. Bierman-Lytle is designing an 1,800-acre site that includes two major hotels, convention centers, spa/health resort, offices, residential communities, retail shopping 'village', and a major "edutainment" theme park. He is incorporating hundreds of sustainable development components into the project that, when implemented, will prevent pollution, minimize waste, and ensure energy efficiency. The project represents extensive use of environmentally friendly design, building materials, and systems that will create a new, sustainable development benchmark community.
Mr. Bierman-Lytle's international renown as an environmental architect and planner has allowed him access to major corporations around the world that seek to build partnerships in developing projects from IT software, to building materials, to transportation. He has participated at the WBCSD (World Business Council on Sustainable Development) with over 120 international corporations in developing a 'business case' for sustainable design and development. He has been a representative at HRH The Prince of Wales International Hotels Environment Initiative (IHEI) in London, a forum of the top 15 international hotels to develop sustainability guidelines for the travel and tourism industry. In addition, Mr. Bierman-Lytle has established strong alliances with divisions within the World Bank that focus on private sector partnerships, including IFC and GEF.
Sustainable Environment Associates (SEAS) Corporation; President and CEO; 1993-1998. At SEAS, Mr. Bierman-Lytle developed environmentally compatible, low impact, sustainable designs for buildings and community developments. Originally conceived as a "swat team" for sustainable development consulting, SEAS provided full architectural design services. Mr. Bierman-Lytle's work focused on island resort areas of the Caribbean which are characterized by limited space and resources. He launched a global Sustainable Islands Nations Business And Development (SINBAD) program targeting seven international island basins: Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, North America, South America, and Antarctica. The campaign seeks to implement Agenda 21 solutions to specific nations in comprehensive and replicable sustainable development demonstrations. These projects incorporate building applications that Mr. Bierman-Lytle initiated in the early 1980s while promoting innovations such as identification of the 'carrying capacity' of islands, and education-entertainment centers that collect island-wide data on environmental performance. These centers interact with the public schools and with tourism.
The Masters Corporation; Environmental Architects and Builders; President and Founder; 1978-1996. For 18 years, Mr. Bierman-Lytle led this custom residential design-build firm. Awarded First Place in the annual Yale Architectural School design competition, Mr. Bierman-Lytle's award-winning design and construction of passive solar homes and resorts were featured in Architectural Digest and other industry, national and international publications, and were featured on CNN, ABC, NBC, German and Australia television. Noteworthy for the function and utility offered by fully integrating solar energy components into the design to improve home aesthetics, and focusing on the effects of building environments on 'health' of the occupants, the Master's Corporation developed a radical departure from the industry standard of simply adding solar capabilities to a conventional design and understanding the complex health hazards derived from building materials. This groundbreaking effort directly contributed to growing demand for innovative environmental homes through the late 1970s and 1980s. Over 150 critically acclaimed residential and resort projects were completed worldwide.
Mr. Bierman-Lytle was Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious Yale Architectural Journal and published "Your Natural Home", Little Brown & Company, publishers, NY, in 1995. He has taught at Yale University, UCLA, and Braunschweig Technische Universitat (Germany); he has lectured extensively around the world.
