 Join the Vermont Family Business Initiative as we kick off the 2006-2007 forum series with an in-depth look at the origin of leadership and change in all organizations - YOU. Leadership begins with self.

Dr. Murray Bowen, in his groundbreaking research on human relationship functioning, stated that each one’s willingness to take full responsibility for self defines one’s degree of emotional maturity. Business leaders easily get seduced into focusing on, blaming and micro-managing others instead of adjusting their own thinking and behavior to promote positive results.

Managing Self will help participants examine specific relationship challenges that exist within each one’s life, family and workplace and how to begin to make radical change in the most effective way: with yourself. Using a lively combination of engaging stories, scientific research and practical applications, our presenter will explore the characteristics of high-maturity leadership, and how the self can be used as a resource to manage chronic anxiety, the potent enemy of progress.

Presenter Bio:

 John Engels is founder and president of Leadership Coaching, Inc an executive consulting firm in Upstate New York, focused on the mentoring and growth of CEOs, presidents and their executive teams.

After growing up working in his family’s business, John graduated with a communications degree from St. Bonaventure University and earned an M.A. in theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He has delivered leadership lectures for the Young Presidents Organization, the Japan Family Center, University of Rochester Medical Center, Tazaki Psychiatric Hospital in Okinawa, Georgetown Family Center, Simon School of Business, American Society of Certified Public Accountants and numerous other professional organizations.

John’s leadership development experience has included professional partnerships (accounting, medical, dental, legal, engineering, etc.), family businesses, educational and religious institutions, government organizations, and global corporations representing many sectors of the service and manufacturing sectors. His annual Advanced Leadership Course for CEOs has been recognized nationally for its depth and practical emphasis on high-level functioning at work and home.

John has traveled widely, taking part in developing world projects in Bangladesh, Haiti and Peru. His uncommon approaches to leadership have been featured in The New York Times, ABC 20/20, Handelsblatt (Germany’s largest business daily), his award-winning book of essays, A Guide for Leaders, and many other publications and broadcasts throughout the world.

    WHY WE NEED YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER
    Act 192 of the 2008 Vermont Legislature requires employers and other training providers receiving support from the state to provide the social security number of each individual participating in the training to the department of state government supporting the training. The social security number will be used to gather wage information from the Department of Labor's files after you complete training, in order to evaluate the training program.

    The Departments of Labor and Economic Development must provide information on the employment outcomes of training programs to the Legislature. Your information will be combined with information of other trainees to ensure your privacy and the privacy of your employer. The law requires the departments to keep your information confidential.
