Family and privately owned businesses often run the risk of operating within a vacuum. Businesses that have implemented and utilize an effective Board of Advisors have discovered how beneficial a Board can be. A well chosen and organized Board of Advisors can provide expertise across generations, skill areas and industries. Conversely, a poorly chosen Board can become an obstacle to business success and a burden to transition. Whether your business has already formed a Board of Advisors or is in the early stages of consideration, this forum will examine how an effective Board can become an important tool in managing, growing and transitioning your business.

A principal of The Family Business Consulting Group, Inc., Joe Astrachan holds the Wachovia Eminent Scholar Chair of Family Business and is Director of the Cox Family Enterprise Center at the Coles College of Business, Kennesaw State University in Marietta Georgia. He also holds a research chair at Loyola University Chicago’s business school where he directs the research efforts of their well-known Family Business Center.
Astrachan is editor of Family Business Review, a scholarly publication of the Family Firm Institute (FFI) of which he is a former board member. He has been involved with such lobbying groups as The Committee to Preserve American Family Businesses, Family Businesses of America, and the Center for the Study of Taxation; is a member of the Academy of Management, Southern Management Association, National Association of Business Economists and the Family Business Network; a founding member of the Yale Program for the Study of Family Firms; a member of the team that designed and conducted several national research projects; and director of Kennesaw State University’s Estate Tax Research Program. Astrachan received the Richard Beckhard Award, which is the Family Firm Institute’s highest honor for contributions to the field of family business. He also received the International Family Business Program Association’s Lifetime Achievement in Research Award. In addition, he is a founding board member and fellow of the International Family Business Research Academy.

WHY WE NEED YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER
Act 192 of the 2008 Vermont Legislature requires employers and other training providers receiving support from the state to provide the social security number of each individual participating in the training to the department of state government supporting the training. The social security number will be used to gather wage information from the Department of Labor's files after you complete training, in order to evaluate the training program.
The Departments of Labor and Economic Development must provide information on the employment outcomes of training programs to the Legislature. Your information will be combined with information of other trainees to ensure your privacy and the privacy of your employer. The law requires the departments to keep your information confidential.
