Hello All. My name is Felisha. I am 16 years old and I live in Franklin County, Vermont.
I am a part of Speak Out For Military Kids, or SOMK. Lately we have been discussing the causes of stress,
kinds of stress but mostly how to deal with it. For me, stress is a very real problem. I am the daughter
of a Captain in the Army National Guard. My dad being in the guard sometimes adds a lot of extra stress to my
somewhat chaotic life. I have SIX siblings. Two older sisters and three younger sisters and one younger brother.
I am headed off to college in Virginia at the end August, I'm really excited but so nervous. So as you can see I
a lot of things on my plate and that often causes me to be stressed. I know you might be worried or really stressed
too, so I thought I would share my different ways I get rid of stress and cope with the situations I'm put in.
Stress Erasers
- Listen to my favorite music. I find that when I listen to my music I can feel better and have a better attiude
towards the problems or worry I am facing. When my Dad was deployed I listened to music all the time and before I knew
it he was home again safe and sound. This also works well for me when I'm worried about a school assignment, I'll turn up my
tune while I study and it really helps.
- Another thing that really helps is calling up my best friend and just venting to her. She is there to listen and
knows just what to say that calms me down and lets me look at the situation I'm in in a different way so its not so
overwhelming. You can do the same by calling up a close friend and asking if they will listen to you so you can feel better.
- The last thing I sometimes do is draw or wrirte. I would grab my sketchbook and go somewhere I felt confortable then I would
just draw out my feelings or sometimes journal about it. This helped me get the overwhelming stress out of my system and feel at peace.
