- By Martha Manning
Johnson--A dozen Vermont 4-H'ers competed in the annual State 4-H Poultry Quiz Bowl and Skill-a-thon, March 22, at Johnson State College in Johnson. The event was organized by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H.
Poultry project members from three 4-H clubs, the Champlain Shamrocks, Grand Isle; Feathered Friends, South Burlington; and the Lamoille Localvores, Jeffersonville; took part in the quiz bowl, which consisted of three rounds of 20 questions each. The scores from that were combined with scores from the skill-a-thon, which involved answering questions and completing tasks at stations, such as egg grading, egg judging of broken-out eggs, poultry breed identification and identification of eggs from a variety of poultry species.
Overall winners in each age division, in order of placement, were:
- 8 and 9-year-olds: Audrey Chairvolotti, Grand Isle; Quincy Boardman, Bakersfield; Dhayne Gillen, Johnson.
- 10 and 11-year-olds: Noelani Rupp, South Burlington; Land Boardman, Bakersfield; Ava Carroll, Burlington; Jackson Chairvolotti, Grand Isle; Elias Gillen, Johnson.
- 12 and 13 year-olds: Madeline Chairvolotti, Grand Isle; Annika Cooper, Colchester; Nora Allen, Colchester; Victoria Chang, South Burlington.
The 4-H'ers also competed in a deviled eggs contest, judged by fellow contestants. Top prizes were awarded to Quincy Boardman, Bakersfield (first); Dhayne and Elias Gillen, Johnson (second); Audrey Chairvolotti, Grand Isle (third); Madeline Chairvolotti, Grand Isle (fourth) and Jackson Chairvolotti, Grand Isle (fifth).
In addition to the competitions, participants heard from Dr. Emily Buskey, a veterinarian with Lamoille Valley Veterinary Services in Hyde Park. She spoke to the group about poultry health and diseases as well as her experiences dealing with different poultry issues in her practice.
