Producing Better Pork: Genetics & Management

Time: 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Description: Hogwash Farm, 708 Goodrich Four Corners at Union Village Rd., Norwich, VT

COST: $25 NOFA & VGFA memebers, $50 for non-members

Join NOFA-VT and the Vermont Grass Farmers Association for this workshop dedicated to understanding swine genetics and exercising skilled management can significantly improve pork yield and quality. Dr. Steven J. Moeller, Swine Extension Specialist at Ohio State University, will address breeding, housing, and animal health. We will tour Hogwash Farm's 25-pig operation with farmers Nancy LaRowe and Dave Yesman, highlighting specific challenges and choices they have made over the years. Finally, Howling Hog BBQ will demonstrate and discuss the merits of both grilling and barbecuing pork, followed by a savory tasting!

The farm tour and workshop are scheduled for 2:30 - 5:00pm, with the cooking demo running from 5 - 6:30pm.

About the Presenter: Dr. Steven J. Moeller's academic courses address swine production, animal genetics, animal welfare, animal issues, and meat quality, while his research focus is the genetic factors associated with meat quality, especially pork. He works closely producers across Ohio and the U.S. on swine industry issues and the development of educational programs that can enhance production efficiency.
