Whole Farm Planning for Women Beginning Farmers

Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location: Lamoille County, VT
Description: The course will cover a wide range of topics including how to create a values-based farm mission, improve leadership and communication skills and use management tools such as business planning and marketing strategies to increase farm profitability. Participants also will learn about the whole farm decision analysis process, time management, land and infrastructure planning, soil fertility and integration of livestock on the farm.

Applications for this course are now being accepted through November 15. Space is limited to 17 qualified participants. Full and partial scholarships are available to cover the registration fee, which is on a sliding scale of $150 to $500. An online application form may be found at www.uvm.edu/newfarmer. Building a Sustainable Business

The Building a Sustainable Business course guides participants through developing a business plan for farms businesses. People who have completed Growing Places and/or who have at least one year of production/financial records of their own will find this course most useful.

Classes will be offered simultaneously in multiple locations in Vermont, with an on-site instructor at each location. Registration discounts are available for people who have completed Growing Places and who register by the early registration deadline. Growing Places ~online~

Description: When: January 13 - February 10, 2014
Cost: $110-$150. Financial assistance is available for qualified applicants.

A $25 late fee will be applied to registration after December 13. Scholarships and financial aid are available.

The course will offer a realistic perspective on what it takes to operate an agricultural business to allow aspiring farmers to decide how agriculture fits best into their future plans. Anyone interested in starting a farm, specialty food business or other agriculture-related enterprise is welcome to enroll in the course.

The online class format includes self-paced modules and discussion boards, allowing participants to fit in class time when it works best for their schedule. In addition, a weekly webinar allows for real-time presentations and Q&A. All webinars are recorded and can be viewed later for those who cannot participate in the live presentation.

Ground Work: Tractor Skills & Farm Mechanization Decision Making

Location: Online & 1 hands-on day in Essex
Description: Effective Strategies for Teaching Tractor Skills and Farm Mechanization Decision Making

A new professional development (train-the-trainer) program to prepare and support agricultural educators, farmers, and farm service providers to deliver farm mechanization and tractor education to beginning farmers, farm workers, and apprentices throughout the Northeast.

The hands-on training is May 21st or 22nd (trainee choice), in Essex Junction, VT.

Registration Deadline: December 20th, 2013

Thanks to a grant from the Northeast SARE Professional Development Program, there is no tuition cost to participate. However, participants are expected to cover travel expenses to attend the hands-on, in-person training day in Essex Junction, Vermont. Lodging will be provided as needed.

Intro to Ag Financial Management

This course provides farmers with the knowledge they need to understand and complete a balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement. Participants will learn the basics of budgeting and skills to anticipate the financial needs of their farm operations. Participants can choose to participate in a clinic with one-to-one assistance at no additional charge.

Classes will be offered simultaneously in Burlington and White River Junction, Vermont, with an on-site instructor at each location.
