Global Food, Local Food: UVM Campus Launch Event

Time: 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Description: UVM, Lafayette Hall Rm. L-207, Burlington, VT

COST: Free

Come meet two New American farmers, and learn about the culturally important crops that they’ve brought from African and Asia to grow here in Vermont. They’re two of the growers featured in the new Global Food, Local Food: Guide to Growing,
Harvesting & Preserving African & Asian Crops in the Northeast, published by the UVM Extension Center for Sustainable Agriculture and the New Farms for New Americans Program of the Association of Africans Living in Vermont. This event is sponsored by UVM’s Anthropology and Geography Departments, CDAE, the Food Systems Initiative and Extension.

The Guide was published to help Northeastern farmers and gardeners adapt important crops of world cultures into the local food system to be grown successfully for market, food and/or medicine. It offers growing tips, cultivation notes, seed sourcing information, cultural notes, and other information for eight important African and Asian crops with significant potential for adapting to the food system of the Northeast: Rice, Daikon Radish, African Eggplant, Amaranth Greens, Bitter Melon, Roselle, African Corn, & Mustard Greens.

CONTACT: Cheryl Herrick at 802-656-5459 or cheryl.herrick@uvm.edu. The Guide is available for free download at www.uvm.edu/~susagctr/?Page=resources/index.php#books
