Practical Produce Safety Workshop: Middlebury

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

COST: $18

UVM Extension’s Center for Sustainable Agriculture, with support from the USDA’s Specialty Crop Block Grant program, will offer five full day workshops on practical food safety for small and diversified farms who market directly and locally.

As a participant, you will start drafting your plan from a template before you even arrive! Once at the workshop, you will :

* track (with the group) specific examples of how contamination of fresh produce can occur on VT farms,
* learn from experienced PPS graduates about their set ups and best practices to reduce risk,
* learn the science behind the risks and best practices
* have time to keep drafting your plan, get feedback, and enjoy some yummy refreshments!

By the end of this workshop, you will have finished a on-farm produce safety plan with specific action-steps needed to implement it on your farm. Participants from neighboring states are encouraged to attend.

Building a Sustainable Business

Time: 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Berlin Ext Office or Webinar
Description: The Building a Sustainable Business course guides participants through developing a business plan for farm businesses. This class is designed for people who have completed Growing Places and/or who have at least one year of commercial production experience and production/financial records of their own.

Early registration deadline: Nov. 12, 2014; Cost: $110
Standard registration deadline: Nov. 26, 2014, Cost: $150
Registrations received after Nov. 26, 2014 will be subject to a $50 late fee.

Bedded Pack Winter Manure Mgmt. Training

Time: 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Description: UVM Extension Office, 23 Pond Lane, Middlebury, VT

COST: $25 per person includes lunch and materials

Are you interested in using a bedded pack for your winter manure management? Wondering how much bedding you’ll need, what the costs will be, and how managing a pack works? Attend one of these trainings, featuring compost specialist Brian Jerose and other partners to help you understand how to build and maintain a pack to meet your needs. The day will also include calculations for bedding, building and costs; NRCS requirements to receive funding; animal health; and a Q&A with a farmer experienced in managing a pack.

If you plan to sign up for the NRCS bedded pack cost share this year, you MUST attend one of these trainings.
