State 4-H Horse Communications Team Selected in Recent Competition
- By Wendy M. Sorrell
Vermont 4-H teens competed June 30 for a chance to represent the state at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Round Up in Kentucky this fall.
The annual State 4-H Horse Communications Contest, sponsored by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H, took place at the State 4-H Office on the UVM campus in Burlington. The competition was open to all Vermont 4-H horse project members 14-18 years old and consisted of public speaking, individual demonstration and team demonstration contests. The first-place winners in each of the three contests were named to the State 4-H Horse Communications Team.
For the public speaking contest, the 4-H'ers were required to give a seven- to 10-minute speech about an equine-related topic without using any props. Winner Kyle Scott of Milton presented a talk entitled "The Darkness Within," based on the true story of a neglected and abused Vermont horse and his road to recovery. Runner-up and team alternate Lauralee Nop of Middlebury spoke on common equine diseases in Vermont.
Individual demonstrations were nine to 12 minutes each and required the use of charts, posters and other visuals. The team demonstrations followed the same criteria but were 10 to 15 minutes long.
Holly Weglarz, Hartland, took top honors in the individual demonstration contest. Her presentation, entitled "That Hits the Spot," focused on the Appaloosa breed and how it developed. The team demonstration contest was won by Morgan Quimby, Underhill, and Ashley Scott, Milton. Their demonstration, "Home, Sweet Home," was about designing a horse barn.
Earlier this year, other statewide 4-H horse contests were held including hippology, judging and quiz bowl. The top four winners in the senior division (ages 14 and up) at each of those contests also earned the opportunity to compete at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Round Up in November.
The 4-H'ers, by team, who will be competing, along with the Communications Team, include:
HIPPOLOGY TEAM: Courtney Bronson, Shoreham; Lexy Brooks, Whitehall, N.Y.; Ruth Snow, Shelburne; Madison Wood, Concord.
JUDGING TEAM: Katelyn Patenaude, Derby Line; Rachel Scibek, Colchester; Catherine Thrasher, Rupert; Kassidy Wyman, Cambridgeport.
QUIZ BOWL: David Gringeri, West Haven; Kaelyn Jenny, Essex; Emma Pearson, North Hero; Alexis Walker, Essex.
Mary Fay, adult leader of the Whispering Pines 4-H Club of Jericho and a long-time 4-H horse program volunteer, will be the trip coordinator.
