Dairy Judging Contest Held in Enosburg Falls

Enosburg Falls--More than 60 Vermont 4-H'ers had an opportunity to test their cattle judging skills at the annual State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest, June 23 in Franklin County. For older participants, the contest also served as the qualifying event for selection to the Vermont State 4-H Dairy Judging Team that will compete both regionally and nationally.

All contestants judged two classes of Jersey cows, two classes of Holsteins and two classes of Brown Swiss. Host farms for the event, which was sponsored by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H, included Green Wind Farm, Carpsdale Farm and Boston Post Dairy, all in Enosburg Falls.

The four seniors (ages 14 and older) who earned the highest overall scores in competition were named to the state 4-H dairy judging team. In order of placement they were: Megan Hill, Addison County; Alexis Ouellette, Addison County; Maggie Kirby, Orleans County; and Cole Goodhue, Franklin County.

Also participating: Dakotah Heuckeroth and Hailey Knowles, Rutland County; Ashley Thompson, Jacob Patenaude, Monica Kerr and Kyle Letourneau, Orleans County; Michael Ingwersen, Tasha Hescock, Sharon Palmer and Bethany Orvis, Addison County; and Shelby Biasini, Lamoille County

The team will compete at Eastern States Exposition in W. Springfield, Mass. this fall and again next year and at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest in October 2015, held in conjunction with the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis.

In addition to the top seniors, winners in the other age groups included, in order of placement:
12 to 13 years old--Lily Vaughan, Orange County; Isabelle Hall, Orleans County; Renee Bolduc, Addison County; Lucy Kelley, Lamoille County

Also participating: Chandra Stanley, Franklin County; Katelyn Ouellette, Erika Tracey, Matthew Ouellette, Michael Jewett, Bethany Palmer, Nicole Palmer, Audrey Huston, Johnny Hill and Virginia Patz, Addison County; Seth Carsen and Katherine Howard, Orange County; Justin Thurber, Madison Urie, Ronan Hill and Maddie Nadeau, Orleans County; Hillary Mitchell, Lamoille County; and Brookelyn Dennis, Caledonia County
 
10 to 11 years old--Caroline Kirby, Orleans County; Case Ballard, Franklin County; Hunter  Michaud, Orleans County; Adam Messier, Orange County
